The Intermediate French Immersion Program aims primarily at improving the communication skills of students (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010). More specifically, throughout the program students are expected to:
- "communicate for different purposes" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 33)
- "obtain information, share experiences and broaden perspectives" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 34)
- "communicate effectively" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 36)
- "use a combination of cueing systems and strategies to read, view and understand texts" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 37)
- "demonstrate interest in reading and viewing as a means to extend knowledge and skills" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 38)
- "use the writing process in each type of discourse" (Gouvernement de Terre-Neuve et du Labrador, Ministère de l’Éducation, 2010, p. 39).
